Anyone know where you can download a copy of the ET2/ET4 Repair Manual... found one for download, but saying the PDF is a blurry scan is putting it gently?

I need to replace a belt and am looking for a little insight before tackling the project...

there was a charmingly retro/ironic television commercial on last night for the 2 seattle vespa stores, which reminded me a lot of the magazine and television ads from the 60's....obviously style-conscious modern dude pulls up to a restaurant on his vespa, meets fabulously dressed young woman on what appears to be a blind date, they try to sit and wait to be served but can't help themselves and run out to the vespa to drive around on it.....i'm curious if anyone knows who produced the commercial, it was amusing and well done.

trauma survival information

Is it a Heart Attack or a Motorcycle Crash?

Vicki Sanfelipo, RN/EMT – Director Accident Scene Management, Inc.

I am very concerned about motorcyclist’s well-being. I’ve been riding for well over 20 years and used to be able to enjoy the ride without knowing how vulnerable I was. I’m not talking about protective gear or the fact that we are not surrounded by metal. I’m talking about what happens in the event we go down. Bikers are at much higher risk of dying in the event of a crash.

According to NHTSA’s 2007 Recent Trends in Motorcycle Crashes: “In 2005, motorcycles made up 2.5 percent of all registered vehicles in the United States and accounted for only 0.4 percent of all vehicle miles traveled (VMT). However, in the same year, motorcyclists accounted for 10.5 percent of total traffic fatalities. Per 100,000 registered vehicles, the fatality rate for motorcyclists (73.12) in 2005 was 5.4 times the fatality rate for passenger car occupants (13.64). Per vehicle mile traveled in 2005, motorcyclists (42.27) were about 37 times as likely as passenger car occupants (1.14) to die in motor vehicle traffic crashes.”

While NHTSA statistics can be in question without other stats to point to, their statistics show an alarming trend. Even if slightly off this is STILL alarming! We (motorcyclists) must not accept the fact that 10.5 % of motor vehicle fatalities are motorcycle related. I have been tracking these statistics for 12 years and they have not changed significantly. While we have put all of our eggs into one basket by concentrating on avoiding the crash in the first place, treatment after the crash occurs has largely been ignored. It not only has been ignored by motorcyclists, it’s been ignored by the Emergency Medical System (EMS) as well! While avoiding the crash in the first place is extremely important, all of our efforts have not significantly changed the number of motorcycle related crashes. (NHTSA - 93Motorcycles{1}).

I recently toured a 911 dispatch center. I asked what advice they would give for a motorcyclist who was not breathing and had a full face helmet on. They said they would recommend that the caller pump on the chest, up to 300 times per minute. I asked a group of 50 motorcyclists how they would treat a motorcyclist who wasn’t breathing and was unconscious. They said THEY would open the airway (head tilt/chin lift) and do chest compressions. I polled EMTs. 75% were not “comfortable” with the jaw thrust method of opening a person’s airway while keeping the neck straight and 60% had not learned helmet removal as part of their training.

So much needs to be done in the area of Motorcycle Trauma Treatment that I am dumbfounded we have actually survived! While motorcycle rider training and share the road programs should continue in order to prevent the crash in the first place, proper care and treatment after the fact must be addressed in order to reduce the 10.5% of serious injuries and fatalities motorcyclists suffer. The most likely person to be at the scene of a motorcycle crash is another motorcyclist. Treatment can start right away if we are trained in proper care. In the event that another trained motorcyclist is not there, we want to know that advice given by the 911 dispatcher is correct. When professionals arrive we want to rest assured that they can provide proper care as well.

The American Heart Association recently came out with the recommendation that Chest Compressions only with minimal interruptions has increased survival rates in victims of witnessed cardiac arrest. This has sparked much media attention. For years, CPR was thought to be the “cure all” for anyone who collapsed for any reason and was not thought to be breathing. There was no clear distinction between trauma and heart attack/cardiac arrest other than an occasional mention of using jaw thrust for someone who might have a neck injury. In the past few years, the American Heart Association has obviously moved away from trauma and is concentrating more on their actual purpose (survival rates of cardiac arrest) vs. survival rates of Trauma. The problem with this is that the general public and even medical professionals have not made the separation.

Both Head Tilt Chin Lift and pumping on the chest are the wrong things to do in a trauma unless Jaw Thrust and Bleeding control measures have not been effective. A Motorcyclist who has crashed so significantly that they are no longer breathing should be highly suspected as a person with high cervical spine neck injury. Jaw Thrust Rescue Breathing keeps the neck straight while lifting the tongue off the back of the throat which is the most likely reason that they are not breathing. Once breathing has been established, circulation should be considered. In trauma, the most likely reasons for loss of circulation is bleeding, not pump failure like in cardiac arrest. Imagine that you have someone who is bleeding and you now start pumping on the chest. You will just help them bleed out faster!

So what can we do? It’s time to take control of our own fate. Helmet removal training is not enough, CPR is not enough, and First Aid is not enough.

1.) Bystander Assistance Trauma training by motorcyclists is the BEST way to start proper care immediately. See www.accidentscene.org to find classes or get more information.

2.) We need to get the attention of the EMS and insist that they give proper advice as well as being certain that they are properly trained in motorcycle specific care from First Responder level to Paramedic. Write to your legislators asking them to contact the US DOT to request that they work with Accident Scene Management, Inc. (ASMI) to develop a module on motorcycle trauma as part of Basic EMT training (currently they only mention helmet removal, but even that is not required).

3.) Get this word out. Reprint this article in your newsletters.

4.) Help get ASMI training in all states and available to all bikers. Encourage Motorcycle groups and organizations to make a donation to ASMI which is leading the way in this topic. ASMI is in 26 states but our goal is to be in every state some day. Because we are so motorcycle specific we are not eligible for most grants. We depend on motorcyclists to help us achieve our goals.

Sunday, 9/23: scooterists get in free to Oaks Park

http://www.oregonscooterclub.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=228&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0

Sunday, September 23
11am-7pm
Oaks Amusement Park, SE Portland
Scooter/Motorcycle Shine & Show

Each participant in the Shine & Show gets a free bracelet (a $19 value!). They are VIP bracelets and include all the rides (except Go Karts, which are a separate thing, but you get the bumper cars, big roller coaster, Screamin' Eagle, all the good stuff) and roller skating (on Sunday they play the antique organ, super fun and kitschy!). Plus your gate admission to Oktoberfest is included.

Festivities include authentic German food & beer, 2 large Oompah stages w/local talent and bands from Germany, shows and crafts for kids, cooking demonstrations, dog shows, craft vendors, and of course thrill rides and roller skating rink.

They are going to have all the scooters park along the waterfront road in the Oktoberfest venue. They want the public to be able to come and view the bikes. When you arrive & enter the parking lot, head toward the skating rink and go around the far side of it - that's where they'll let you in & will direct you to the scooter parking area.

Scooter passengers also get free admission/bracelets.

Riding For Peace

A little over a month ago, Alix Bryan decided to make one of those "split-second life changing decisions." She half-jokingly said, "I want to put a peace sign on the map," paused, reflected and determined that is exactly what she wanted to do.
The next month was a whirlwind of plotting and planning-resulting in P.E.A.C.E, SCOOTER-A Patriots Exhibition Advancing Community and Environmentalism, on a Scooter.
She will literally put Peace on the map this summer, starting from the White House and ending at the "Western White House," in Crawford, Texas.
The trip route is roughly 9,000+miles and takes over ten weeks( or 2 months) to complete.
A scooter enthusiast, her Buddy125 was a natural choice for travel-they are "environmentally friendlier," and riding one brings her a lot of peace. Also, Alix felt that since everyone is awfully concerned about the environment it would help people see the natural brilliance to riding a scooter. "If I can ride one 9,000 miles-people can ride one 15 miles to work."

The impetus for the trip? Well, aside from a damn good reason for riding Highway One on her scooter- Peace is to be the message, first and foremost.
She attended a John Lennon exhibit in her hometown, Charlottesville, VA and noticed this statement, "If one billion people were thinking about Peace, we would have Peace." She thought, "why wouldn't one billion people be thinking about Peace?" To her, Peace isn't political by nature, although it has craftily been branded that way. To her, the beginning of Peace is the relationship to yourself and your environment-and at a bigger level-the way conflict is solved and policy created. Years of active involvement with the anti-war movement led Alix to realize, "protests are often exclusive-not everyone will attend-people think they are too political-and protesting itself is doesn't always provide a direct link to change at an inner or community level." "I became frustrated by marching, holding up a sign, media comes out, clicks the cameras for the articles-and nothing changes politically." War, even anti-war, is not her focus. Peace is.

"I am trying to do something where the war isn’t the focus, but Peace is. Hopefully, if we start from that perspective, we eventually all get to the same point-that war doesn’t seem to solve conflict or create justice, it just establishes power-power over and not power with-which is what a democracy is supposed to be. The more we focus on war- even “anti-war” the further we are from the heart of what Peace is and what it means to the individual. That is why this summer I am just asking people to define Peace. Let's start there. The individual who takes the time to define something has just empowered themselves and created a way to measure results. Yes, it is an uprising-not a revolution-revolutions just usually go full circle, right? This is going up and further.
I think everyone can offer me their own personal definition of Peace. I can’t think of anyone who would truly say and mean that they don’t want peace for themselves in some manner…and I’m just riding around trying to figure out what those personal definitions are. ”
The route itself is her pro-peace demonstration. "It feels like I am accomplishing more than holding up a sign at a protest-P.E.A.C.E. SCOOTER is the sign," she says.

She might just be pulling into a town near you and would love some company. Advice along the way is appreciated-roads, coffee shops, health food stores-or even a free lunch!

Stay up to date on her website, www.peacescooter.com. There she will be posting on a variety of subjects: life on a scooter for two months, musings, gear, roadways and the Peace interviews.
And she says remember- "Don't point one finger, point TWO!"

Insurance? New Scooter?

Hi,
I am shopping around for my first scooter and am also looking at insurance quotes. Most people have told me that they pay $100 a year for insurance but most of the quotes I have been getting have been $700 to $1000 a year. What am I doing wrong? I have not had any accidents in the past 5 years and will have a motorcycle license and have taken the class. I have tried Progressive and Geico and they give me similar results. Any suggestions?

Also, if anyone has an inexpensive basic starter scooter for sale in the SF Bay Area please let me know.

Thanks!

it finally happened - i let the battery go. ... and can't start my vespa.

i tried the kick starter, and it was nearly impossible to move! so after a few attempts and almost dropping the scooter... it's now in this weird sounding i'm-trying-to-start sound, but not. i took the key out even!

i'm afraid to put the charger to it - the only one i have is a car charger which has a low setting of 2 AMPS (2/12/75). when i did hook it up mementarily it made the aforementioned sound go quicker and louder. it's now been about 20 minutes and the sound has stopped.

help! please! what do i do?
thank you! jodi

Dear Makers,

We are pleased to announce Bay Area Maker Faire 2007!

Organized by the staff of MAKE and CRAFT magazines, Maker Faire is a newfangled fair that brings together science, art, craft an engineering in a fun, energized, and exciting public forum. The aim is to inspire people of all ages to roll up their sleeves and become makers. This family-friendly event showcases the amazing work of all kinds of makers--anyone who is embracing DIY and wants to share their accomplishments with an appreciative audience. Last year, we had 20,000 people at Maker Faire.

Maker Faire Bay Area will take place May 19-20, 2007 at the San Mateo Fairgrounds. We are also adding Maker Faire Austin for October 20-21, 2007 at the Travis County Fairgrounds. This call is primarily for Maker Faire Bay Area but you can indicate if you are interested in participating in Maker Faire Austin.

We encourage you to join the fun and propose a maker exhibit, performance or workshop. You can submit a proposal through the web using the link described below or you can come show us your work at a Maker Faire "audition" on Saturday, February 24 at TechShop in Menlo Park, CA.

http://www.makerfaire.com

Proposals: We invite proposals for Maker workbench exhibits, workshops, presentations and performances for the Maker Faire. We are interested in proposals from individuals as well as from groups such as hobbyist clubs and schools.

Maker Workbench: Our standard setup for Makers is a six-foot long workbench. You can use this workbench to display your work and/or demonstrate how you make something. Some makers don't need workbenches, typically because they have a large object or they set up outside. Please provide a short description of what you make and what you will bring to Maker Faire. Please link to photographs or videos of what you make. Let us know about any requirements you have, such as electricity, Internet, ventilation, etc.

Interactive Performance: We're seeking performances that will engage and entertain the attendees and enable them to interact in a fun way. The performances may be tied to a stage or roving through the fairgrounds as a kind of street theatre. Performances could be musical or theatrical, but they could also be a collaborative building process. For example, you might work with attendees to put something large together in an hour.

Presentation: These includes audio-visual presentations intended for showing a project (or process) that cannot be brought to the faire, or a special project that requires AV resources. These presentations are limited to 20 minutes. Please describe the topic of your presentation and what kind of media (audio/video) that you will have. As a general rule, PowerPoint presentations are not appropriate for this event unless they are unusually entertaining.

Demonstration Workshop: A demonstration workshop is a show-and-tell session on how to make something. We're looking for makers who can demonstrate (and teach) particular skills, techniques or processes. You should start off by explaining your materials and tools and then step-through a build process, sharing your knowledge and interacting with the audience. Sessions should be under 30 minutes in length and may be repeated on the program. Please describe the subject of your workshop and what kind of setup you need for it.

Application Form: Please go to the following URL and fill it out to apply for participation as a maker. http://makerfaire.com/bayarea/2007/proposal/

All proposals will be reviewed and we will notify makers of acceptance via email by March 19, 2007.

NOTE: Presenters whose talks are accepted will receive free registration to Maker Faire. We cannot pay for travel and accommodations. (We do make exceptions under some circumstances.) If you have any questions about participating in Maker Faire, please contact Natalie Villalobos by email: info@makerfaire.com. Please let Natalie know if you plan to come to the audition at TechShop.

Key Points:

* Maker Proposal Due: Midnight (PST): Feb. 27, 2007

I just got a pair of leather ankle boots specifically for riding to work and back. The heels are 3 inches, but are big and chunky, not stillettos. Is this a good idea or should I return them? Does anyone have experience riding in heels?

So we were driving back from Santa Cruz on saturday and came across a gang of scoots at some English pub on Hgwy 1.. I spotted some club patches and one was the scooter girls.. is anyone on here from that group? Did they organize the event?

I've never taken pumpkin on a highway, freeway, bridge etc and figure I could only do this if it were within a group. I wonder what route they took and how long it took.

I am moving my vespa (ET2) from MD to NV. It will take 5 days. I am using a minivan because, other than my scooter, I don't have that much to move. Is it worth draining all the fluids? Or is this a simple case of...do you really want to drive around with a gased up scooter in your van? Any advice would be appreciated.

So, I've just learned that I'm moving from California to Ohio this summer, probably August. I know how to move furniture, paintings, small kitchen appliances, and even my dog. I'm not so sure about how to move my scooter (Aprilia Mojito 150).

Any hints on how to move my scooter cross country (more or less)? I'm a little nuts, but not nuts enough to ride it myself that far!

i heard awhile ago that it was being debated if bikes could park on the sidewalk or not, seems like everyone has been doing it. anyone know the current law? the ticket didn't specify that my vehicle was a scooter it just says "misc".

Performance advice....

Hey.
I just got a ridiculous deal on my first P200 today. Since the deal was so good, I figured I could justify going nuts on the motor and restoration, (rather than just keeping it beater/ runner).

In any case, does anyone have an experience with 210 cc piston kits, exhaust, carbs, etc...? Post your experiences with brands, combinations, tech forums, whatever!

Here's my mentallity toward the whole thing:
- I'd like better than stock performance, but I don't want to have to beef up too much else to keep up with the motor (e.g. gearbox)
- I also would keep the reliablity and daily-driverness a priority
- I have experience building motorcycle motors, but never a P200. Are certain setup's easier to tune than others?
- "Going Nuts" does not necessarily mean cost is of no concern...

Hopefully this gives you an idea where I'm coming from. Thanks in advance for every bit of advice you can provide!

Cheers

I paid 1400 for the pair. they have new paint, look sharp run great. I'm wondering if i got a deal or not. Also i want to do everything i can to them here since the price in states is so much higher. I wanted the black one cut and streached a bit....what will this do to the retail price? I'll post pics in a day but all i can say now is i love the little buggers.

Not sure how many of you have dealt with Sportique Scooters- the greatest shop in the world- or Dustin Gabel, but he's been reported missing and presumed dead in Hawaii. It happened at the end of October. Here's an article from the Honolulu Advertiser

Posted at 12:07 p.m., Thursday, October 27, 2005 Public's help needed in finding missing surfer Advertiser Staff

CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department are asking for the public's help in locating Dustin Gabel, 36, who was last seen about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Yokohama Beach.

Gabel parked his van at the beach and was seen paddling his surfboard into the bay towards Kaena Point.

On Wednesday, a lifeguard noticed the van still parked and discovered it was unlocked with the keys still in the ignition.

The Coast Guard and Fire Department rescue team members began searching for Gabel about 5 p.m. yesterday. The search resumed today and included a Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin helicopter and C-130 Hercules aircraft from Barbers Point Air Station and the Coast Guard Cutter Kiska, which are searching the area near Yokohama Bay and as far as 10 miles out into the Kau'ai Channel.
Police are asking anyone with information about this person to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300, officer Phil Camero at 529-3394, or *CRIME on cellular phones.

Gabel is described as 6 feet tall, 150 pounds, with blonde hair and hazel eyes.

He was last seen wearing light-colored swim shorts and was using a 9-foot, white surfboard.

Hi!
I've had my Vespa since June. I've been looking around for the right kind of protective - yet stylish - clothing to wear on a daily basis (I loooove my vespa and use it to go everywhere!). Clearly there is a dearth of appropriate scooter attire! Either you got your robo-"racer" style or you got your hell's angels aesthetic. Neither works for the Vespa! Where oh where are the neo-mods?

I'm thinking of starting my own scooter gear company. What do you all think??? Discuss.

hey all-
i am also looking to buy my first scoot. however, i am a fairly experienced me-ka-nic and am good at fixing things (gotta be, i drive old VW's)..
so i am looking for something that maybe i could fiddle with or whatever. is this silly to think i could find something like this (ie, something thats pretty cheap, doesnt run, but isnt about to crumble into bits)?

Vespas - What to do about being short?

Hey there! I'm a new member to this Tribe. I bought a 2001 ET4 off a friend of mine but I am finding that my lack of height is a bit problematic. I am only 5'1".

anyone have advice on how I can shorten my scooter so I can keep it? thinner seats? shaving the foam on the seat? lowering it? I just need another inch or two so I can get more of my feet on the ground when stopped. Riding it is a pleasure.

Thanks!

Help. I am replacing my center stand on my P200 and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas/tricks as to how to get the spring undone? Should I undo it on the muffler side? Or the side attached to the stand? It's kinda tricky to get in there.

gassing up

Really stupid question/problem:
When I'm gassing up my scooter, it's always a struggle. With the kind of gas pumps we have in CA (maybe they are everywhere because of pollution laws), you have this collar on the gas pump that forces you to stick the nozzle way down into your tank (wow, this is sounding naughty) so that the fumes don't escape. But when I push the nozzle into my tank, the tip of the nozzle eventually dips into the gas already in the tank, which makes the pump think that the tank is full and it shuts off. So I have to be very careful about keeping this equilibrium between the pushed-in nozzle and the tip not being too deep in the tank.

Is there some sort of secret to gassing up such a small tank (in comparison with a car's)?

So, we're moving to the desert in October when I plan on buying a scooter. How practical is this? Will the heat make this otherwise nifty way to travel, sweaty, dusty and bum burning if I've parked in sun?
Are there cool ways to shield the bike from the rays without carrying a tent to park under?
Oh so many questions.

hey,
so i'd love to buy a scooter, especially a vespa, but i don't want to spend a ton of money, and i have a few questions for you veterans:

-any advice on where to go to get a good deal in san francisco? i don't need a new scooter, but i want a trustworthy source because i don't know a thing about scooters, so craigslist and ebay are a little intimidating.

-what models should i look for? i don't need freeway legal, but want to be able to carry a passenger around the city.

-how do i know how much i should pay for a certain model/year (in terms of negotiating at the showroom?)

any other advice is *highly* appreciated!

thanks,
mary

Aren't classic Vespa's just really ruggid machines?
I have this strange idea they are more trustworthy, if you maintain them well, than any new mopets with electric gadgets.
Or am I just a closet conservative?

Looking for a good silencer for ET2

I'm trying to find a good silencer for my ET2, and my local shop tells me that they can't get Tecnigas products anymore. I'm wanting to get the Silent Pro cause it looks fairly close to stock and is not terribly loud.

Can anyone suggest where I might be able to pick one up, or possible alternatives to the pipe I had in mind?

Thanks,

Red Vespa Ciao stolen in San Francisco

If you happen to see a red Vespa Ciao from the '70s in San Francisco, odds are that it's the one that was swiped out of my back yard in the Tender-Nob a couple of weeks ago. I had just bought it and was restoring it for my wife to use to commute to her job, but someone had other plans.

Any sightings reported to me would be greatly appreciated!

Greetings...

So it looks like I'm back in the scooter scene again. My last scooter was a 1980 P200e that a rent a car was kind enough to knock me off of. Now I just picked up a Rally 200 from a neighbor who's had it sitting in his garage since 1982.

I pulled the gas tank and carbs and they're a mess. looks like someone poured maple syrup inside. (bad gas) Got the carb cleaned finally, slapped on an aux fuel tank to see if I could get it to fire and realized it has no spark. It's a 1977 Electronic, so it's got a CDI instead of points, so I replaced the battery and began diagnosing the system. I get the pulses from the stator, so I'm thinkin' the CDI's toast. I ordered up a new one as well as a bunch of rubber and gasket bits.

Still have to check out the oil injector and make sure everything else is up to par. Tire replacement on these things is a snap!

Thankfully cosmetically it's in great shape. Has the fairing as well, though that may come off depending on my mood.

I can't wait to get this thing rolling again.

How many of us does this happen to: you've had a crappy day (work, personal, whatever) and you hop on your scoot to blow some of the funk off of you. By the time you get home you've had a complete turn-around in mood and are thanking your lucky stars that instead of buying a new home-theater system (or other big ticket item) you decided to pick up a little two-wheeled bundle of anti-depressant.

I just had to declare my love for my scoot because it has just salvaged the remainder of what had all the markings of a totally crappy day! My Jeep could never do that!

Anyone else experience this phenomenon?

Genuine barn scooter!

For the past 4-5 years a friend had told me about a scooter that was in his mom's barn...it seems that in 1966 the family lived in Michigan...the dad bought a scooter from the Sears mothership in Chicago, tried to ride it home and crashed...he put it in the barn and never rode it again, though they hauled it with them to Oregon when they moved here in the '70s...the dad passed away and the farm fell into decline...but the mom didn't want to give up the scooter. This year she was no longer able to take care of herself and had to move out of the property...my friend called and said "Do you still want that scooter?"
I showed up at the property and in an overgrown back building there it was, a '66 Blue Badge (Primavera) with 20 original miles on it! Imagine my glee! :)
Yesterday I picked it up from an engine rebuild from Scooter Station (Portland)...it lives again!
You will see me on it at upcoming rallies and around town, heehee!

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions before I change my own oil? I just did not like the idea of handing over $80 to someone for a simple oil change on my Vespa.

My ET4 did not want to go this morning. Would catch a start and die. When I finally got it to keep running, it had no "energy" to go and kept threatening to stall. I went around the block very slowly (again, no energy) and finally gave up. Got in my car for a 6 mile commute that took 45 minutes.

Anybody have any experience with this? Advice?

Accidental wheelies

I popped an unintentional wheelie on my '04 Bajaj taking off from a stop light today. Someone in a Rav4 was agitating me by peeling out from stop lights (only to have to stop at the next one just like everyone else), and I got a bit heavy-handed with the throttle/clutch action.

My gt now has the 210 cc kit on it and it made a huge difference in hp. It is very noticeable between 45 and 60 mph and also on hills(I havent been over 60 but it might have made a big difference there also). I don't have the pipe on yet but will put it on in the spring.

Vespa is importing 500 "numbered" px150 into the US. I was at the Vespa boutique in Portland today and they quoted me $4800 for one scooter. They said that they would be getting 4 of the PX models.

The same store sells the Stella for $3300 and Grantourismo for $5500.

Have any of you ever imported a scooter from Europe or any other country for that matter? I'm in the process of organizing the import of around 100 completely restored 60's era scooters and I'm trying to iron out all of the details. Do you know anything about getting them licensed in the U.S.? I have a friend at the DMV and she is looking into it for me but I thought I'd ask the Tribe. Any information you may have on this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks-

I'm scooting up the middle of the two lanes, singing mock-opera to myself: "la la la la LAAAAA SUV to the left is stuck lalalalaaaaa SUV on the right is STUCK lalalalalala lalalaaaa! I go one hundred miles on four-fifty in gas!!! Lalalalalalaaaa"

So, is this okay? Or, should I stop gloating?

Perfect ride in SF

Jet lag be damned, the day was perfect, and I decided to take advantage of it. Since it's a nominal holiday, my wife had the day off work, so we saddled up the Vespa and rode over to our favorite taqueria in the Mission, and got a couple of burritos to go. A stop at the grocery store for some good, cold ale, figs and chocolate, and we hit the road. Our destination was China Beach, but we made a game of getting there via only nice, smaller streets, which took us around Mission Dolores Park, Buena Vista Park, through Golden Gate Park and around Lincoln Park, then around Land's End to China Beach. It was a perfect 80 degrees, with clean air, light traffic, dappled shade--and a seemingly endless sequence of gentle curves, keeping it in 3rd gear for most of the ride.

After a very slow, relaxing picnic and lazing around on the beach for a couple of hours, we finished up by riding back through the Presidio, around the Embarcadero and back up California, where two cable cars laden with tourists waved and took pictures of us while we were stopped behind them at the light.

As I type this, loggy with beer and burrito, I'm listening to the soundtrack from "Jessica", a 1962 movie starring Angie Dickinson, and filmed in Italy. The soundtrack has no less than three songs about Vespas on it, and the cover has a great picture of Dickinson fetchingly astride a Vespa! I've uploaded a cover shot to the photo album.

I ride my Stella daily to work and back. The last couple of days it's been running badly - the throttle tends to stick open and the engine stalls when stopped at lights.

When I return home in late afternoong it runs fine.

Any ideas on what's up?

I recently purchased a Kymco People 50 after conducting some research online and in-store and seeing that comparing both technology and aesthetics, there was no discernable difference that I could see between any of the <50cc scooters except that Vespa costs twice as much.

What am I missing, or is it just the snobbish brand name thing?

Hoping to buy a newer vespa this weekend, but I don't like the new colors. They look like every other motorcycle out there. When was the last year that had the classic mid 60's colors? I'm imagining variations of pale blues, aquas, silver, etc. Am I dreaming or do I have to get a paint job??

Great tribe btw, especially for a former SF resident now living in DC. Seeing more and more scooters out here, so maybe DC is starting to "get it"

New to Vespa

I've always dreamed of having a Vespa, and now that I'm thinking of attending school in San Francisco, I've been more seriously thinking of getting one.

How practical do any of you think it would be to own a Vespa in San Francisco with the hills and all? Will I have problems with that? Is there a way to work on a Vespa that can improve performance on hills?

On Sat Aug 21st. Tampa Two Stroke will host a Pre-Cannonball Ride. Starting at 1 o'clock at Vespa of Tampa for food and refreshments. Then we will eventually end up a Skatepark of Tampa for live music and the DVD release of Two Stroke America (footage shot at the "Sleepaway Camp Rally" - so maybe you'll see yourself on film. ) Join us as we see T.T.S.'s Kieran and Craig off on an 11 day ride from Virginia to California. Free food & drinks, goodie bags, patch, raffle prizes, and we will have shirts for sale for $5. This is our fund raiser for their trip so the suggested donation is $6 per person or 2 for $10. This flyer below is for anyone to print out and pass to their friends who don't have scooters but can join us for the show. Please email kieranwalsh@mindspring.com for further details.
