    i recommend riding naked.

seriously though - you might want to consider what might happen if you have to stop suddenly, or if you bite it which does happen to even the best. personally i would wear something more protective. like go-go boots, for instance.

    and a helmet.

yoga bag? why not? as long as you've got the strap across your torso and not hanging off of one shoulder.

I wouldn't ride with anything strapped to my body that I wouldn't want to fall upon. Or worse, be the fulcrum against which I'd bounce in an accident.
A friend of mine bruised a rib because she had a lipstick in her breast pocket when she fell.

careful the first few hours after a rain, even a light rain, because it mixes with the oil and crap on the road and makes it slippery and you can go horizontal super easy, especially if you bought your vespa used and the tires are old. watch it on hills, and i wouldn't go on the freeway just yet.

also, watch out for other drivers. they're going to be your biggest headache. no matter how well you ride and how well you follow the traffic laws, there is going to be some jackass in a suburban who can't see anything on 2 wheels.

*Laugh* You could have just said "There is always a jackass in a suburban"...

When I am out riding, my bike or a vespa, I have to keep my eyes out for the SUVs, since they are the ones that 99% of the time try to run me off the road.

    How many CCs?

I know that Californians ride anything in flip-flops, but personally, I'm fond of my toes, so while I don't wear boots *all* the time, I do wear closed toes and I tend to wear decent rubbery soles. I have had to make a sudden stop and been grateful for the solid shoes I was wearing, and I don't even usually go that fast (I have a 50 CC 2006 LX that I love madly).

I have a topcase (trunk) on mine so I don't usually carry a bag on my body...I don't want to sound like I'm trying to frighten you, because you could go your whole riding career without an accident of any sort, and Vespas are SO MUCH FUN! but if you do a little research on what happens to people on two wheels when they're involved in any kind of collision or accident, you will wear gloves and solid clothing, if not armour, all the time when you ride. It's pretty scary, and the fact is that as with any kind of motor vehicle accident, you can be a 100% perfect driver at all times: all it takes is for the other guy to be a jerk.

All that said, I hope you have a blast with your new baby! :)

I am not one to start a war, and this tribe IS about scooters and such. That being said, I think it's a pretty generic statement to say that "Californians ride anything in flip flops" I grew up in upstate New York and honestly I saw more people there with way less gear than in California. Most of the people I know ride often and commute in only the best and safest gear all the time. Yes, there are those who choose to ride in flip flops and belly shirts (oy, my skin!), but not everyone is like that.

Well, the poster is in California, and I have been to California, and have empirical evidence that Californians ride scooters, not to mention Harleys or any kind of big bike you like, with flip-flops. And shorts. And t-shirts (or, as you say, not).

I didn't mean to imply that Californians are the only people who do; nor that every Californian does.

I will include a disclaimer the next time so that other states and countries do not feel slighted or unappreciated in any way.
